Our search for signals from extraterrestrial civilizations extends about 1,000 light-years in all directions. But this is only a tiny portion of our Milky Way galaxy.

Even if you find a signal, it may be harder than you think to decide what it is. Sometimes natural signals have patterns that make them sound artificial.
